Synopsis (based on my understanding): There are seven roommates who all have different “charismas”. Charisma might have a different meaning in the story but really it’s just their personalities/character flaws. It’s best to think of each charisma as a character archetype. Each episode is just different shenanigans with the boys.

First impression: Each episode seems to be under 10 minutes so it’s a quick listen. I like the character designs and I think it’s cool that you have something to watch while you listen. The following first impressions were made in real time.

  1. I like the title card. A little introduction to the focus character I guess. WTF have I gotten myself into?! It’s funny but oh so weird. I like it. Is Motohashi going to be my favorite? I have a feeling he’s going to be my favorite.
  2. This one was very short. Tera definitely got a little narcissus in him lol. At least they made it to the cafe I guess.
  3. Just from his intro card, I can tell this is our run of the mill glasses character. Not a bad thing, just normal. OHHHHH! This is the whistle guy from the first episode. Is Sarukawa the only sane person in this house? I would definitely be on Rikai’s neck everyday if this is how he always acts. This episode was really fun. I like the relationship between Rikai and Sarukawa. I can tell they balance each other out.
  4. SPEAK OF THE DEVIL! There’s my little meow-meow. WHO IS PURPLE DUDE AND WHY IS HE HOT?! Okay, he’s my favorite. I’m calling it now! I’m so weak for the flirty type. Oh, I know what you did there writers. Thought I wouldn’t notice that little comment about “tonight”. In Sarukawa’s defense, I literally do the same thing to my siblings. Gotta make it difficult just cause. Sarukawa is definitely my little meow-meow.
  5. (TW: Suicidal ideation) Is he a neet? “He lives a life disconnected from society”? Mhm. So he’s suicidal? I don’t know how I feel about that quite yet. I’m guessing later you learn more background about this character but it was too much too fast for me. I am so close to skipping the rest.
  6. I’m excited for this one! Are we really going to open with the bathroom? Okay, let me prepare myself. YEEEESSSS! YEEESSSS! Amahiko is absolutely my favorite! Amahiko gives “it doesn’t matter the gender. I love who I love” vibes and I’m here for it. The way I started cackling when I heard “world sexy ambassador”. That literally makes no sense and yet totally works for Amahiko. This was another short one but I mean there’s nothing more to say about Amahiko. He said it all himself.
  7. I believe this is the last character introduction. Amahiko, please marry me! Fumiya the scholar has spoken. He’s right though. We all gotta eat somehow. Not Ōse’s avatar floating over everyone like a ghost. I bet you Fumiya is lying through his teeth right now and it’s not even Ōse’s birthday. No words…
  8. I just noticed the outfits change with each episode. Considering this isn’t for an anime or anything, there’s a lot of thought put into this series. Amahiko is so athletic~. I bet his stamina is out of this world~. The gangs all here. Why are we suddenly at a rice field? A heartfelt moment about Sarukawa’s past. That’s exactly what this series needed. We MUST protect Sarukawa at all costs. I’m glad they brought Fumiya’s age up. I too was shocked when his intro card said 19. That dude looks older than me. No way you could ever convince me to go up a hill like that. I promise you no scenery is that beautiful. Fumiya is kind of dangerous. Do I like that about him? Who put him in charge?
  9. Rikai is so extra. I want to throw a brick at him.
  10. Amahiko is back so I’m happy. This man is a national treasure. I’m sure he gets employee of the month awards every month. The most interesting man in the world has nothing on this minister of sexy affairs. The more I learn about Amahiko, the more I’m convinced he’s the best character.

Final impressions (after finishing): This is the first SFW audio drama I’ve enjoyed in a very long time. The characters were unique (from each other) and their interactions felt genuine to each character’s “charisma”. I didn’t think I would like the visual component as much as I did. I really thought like why not make an animated web series if you’re going this far but I think it gave exactly what it was meant to give. The audio dramas are really meant to be a promotional thing so that listeners fall in love with the characters and then go listen to the music. I haven’t listened to the music yet, but the audio drama definitely makes me want to. I like that they’re portrayed as just roommates and not a boyband/entertainment group. It feels like you’re watching a budding friendship unfold. I also think the shipping possibilities for this series are endless. I clocked a lot of jokes that were meant to have a romantic undertone. The only thing I didn’t like was Ōse’s introduction episode. I’m not a fan of how they played his suicidal tendencies for jokes. He could’ve been a character with low self-esteem without all that. I admit that’s hypocritical of me considering how much I love Dazai from Bungo Stray Dogs.

Would I recommend it?: Yes. With proper trigger warnings, I think everyone can find a character that they love. I obviously love Amahiko. I think people who are into idol anime will go bonkers for this series because there are layers to character development (one of which includes music). I plan to continue listening. I’m not going to lie, I’ll probably cherry-pick the Amahiko and Sarukawa episodes going forward. I didn’t hate the other characters, there’s just a lot of episodes and I love Amahiko and Sarukawa more than the others.

P.S. I was actually introduced to this series by a friend and I’m so glad she did. I’ve been converted to a Charisma House fan!
